Midwives to hold national assembly in Cebu City
Publish Date: [Monday, November 11, 2002]
The Philippine Star

More than 200 midwife-entrepreneurs of the Well-Family Midwife Clinics (WFMC) franchise from all over the Philippines will hold their first national assembly at the Cebu Plaza Hotel in Cebu City on Nov. 15 to 16.

This event will herald the formal introduction on the Well-Family Midwife Clinic Partnerships Foundation, Inc. (WPFI) whose main mission is to oversee the management of the WFMC franchise in the years to come.

Senator and former Health Secretary Juan Flavier will serve as keynote speaker to this gathering and will preside over the induction of the newly elected officers of the WPFI.

The national assembly will also serve as an opportunity to highlight the achievements of the WFMC network and its contribution to the family planning and maternal and child health (FP/MCH) service industry in the country.

"For the first time in five years, the midwives, the partner non-governmental organizations, and the supporters of the WFMC will gather together to witness a momentous event for WFMC - its eventual independence from the institutions that have conceived it," said Easter Dasmariñas, resident advisor of JSI Research and Training Institute, Inc. (JSI/RTI), a Boston-based non-profit organization specializing in technical assistance to public health programs.

The WFMC is the product of the creative concept conceived in 1997 by JSI/RTI and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). Under Project TANGO (Technical Assistance for the Conduct of Integrated Family Planning and Maternal Health Services by Philippine Non-governmental Organizations), JSI/RTI and USAID launched a program that will make FP/MCH services more accessible and affordable to middle and lower-income groups.
