John Snow Inc. (JSI) and its non-profit affiliate, JSI Research and Training Institute Inc. (JSI/RTI), are Boston-based consulting firms dedicated to providing technical and management assistance to public health, family planning and environmental health programs throughout the world.

Since its establishment in 1978, JSI has become a recognized leader in the implementation of innovative improvements in public health, environmental health and sanitation, health financing, health policy development, family planning and organizational development.

In the Philippines, JSI/RTI started with the Philippine NGO Strengthening Project in 1991, which was also funded by USAID. After three years, a second phase was launched in 1994 and extended up to Year 2000. It is now called as "Technical Assistance for the Conduct of Integrated Family Planning and Maternal Health Activities by Non-Governmental Organizations II Project" in support of NGOs with midwife-owned clinics. This project is widely known as the TANGO II Project.

Key Players & Roles

JSI/RTI provides the following support to the NGOs and WFMCs:

• Periodic monitoring and evaluation of NGOs and WFMCs for provision of adequate, apt and timely assistance,
• Capability building inputs to enable NGO to strengthen their organizations and thereafter provide required technical assistance to the WFMCs,
• Clinical, business and marketing assistance and inputs to the WFMCs.

The NGO Partner - is the main link between the WFMCs and JSI/RTI and:

• Provides periodic monitoring and supervisory assistance to WFMCs in their network,
• Acts as liaison between WFMC and JSI/RTI,
• Ensures WFMC is provided with required clinical, business and marketing assistance.

WFMC Midwife - owns, operates and manages her Well-Family Midwife Clinic. As such, she:

• Provides start-up and continuing working capital for her business,
• Provides family planning and maternal and child health care services,
• Promotes and markets (does grassroots promotions) her services to existing and potential clients,
• Monitors the performance of her business, and
• Does other key management and entrepreneurial activities.
